Dodgers’ first U.S. game of 2014 season: March 30 in San Diego

LOS ANGELES DODGERS AT SAN DIEGO PADRES

By Jon Weisman

After the Dodgers begin the 2014 regular season with games in Australia against the Arizona Diamondbacks, they will play their third official game March 30 in San Diego.

That’s a change from the original schedule that had the Padres’ home opener scheduled for March 31. That day will now be an off day. The March 30 game will televised by ESPN as the season’s initial Sunday Night Baseball broadcast.

So to clarify the schedule:

  • March 16 (1:05 p.m.) — final Cactus League game vs. Rockies at Camelback Ranch
  • March 17-21 — off
  • March 22 (1 a.m. in Los Angeles, 7 p.m. in Sydney) — opening game vs. Diamondbacks in Sydney
  • March 22 (7 p.m. in Los Angeles, 1 p.m. March 23 in Sydney)—game two vs. Diamondbacks in Sydney
  • March 23-26—off
  • March 27 (7:10 p.m.) — exhibition game vs. Angels at Dodger Stadium
  • March 28 (7:10 p.m.) — exhibition game vs. Angels at Dodger Stadium
  • March 29 (6:05 p.m.) — exhibition game vs. Angels at Anaheim
  • March 30 (5:05 p.m.) — regular season game vs. Padres at San Diego
  • March 31 — off
  • April 1 (TBD) — regular-season game vs. Padres at San Diego
  • April 2 (7:10 p.m.) — regular-season game vs. Padres at San Diego
  • April 3 — off
  • April 4 (1:10 p.m.) — home opener vs. Giants at Dodger Stadium

Update: The April 1 game at San Diego now has a 3:40 p.m. start time.

Hey Jon I think the home opener is on the 4th right?

Yep – that’s my second typo of the year already (sigh).

Minor mistake it happens to all of us. Keep up the good work and congrats on the new gig

Can you tell us which exhibition games Vin will be calling? Thanks.

I don’t have that specific information currently.

Can you post it (perhaps in a new posting) when you do? Thanks! I love hearing him call games, even if they don’t count :).

Good thing my reservation in San Diego starts Sunday.

This the home opener for San Diego, right Jon?

crzblue, yeah it’s the Padres’ home opener. ESPN will probably show at least some of the inevitable tribute to Jerry Coleman that the Padres will do. And that might mean Vinnie will do the game on radio because I can’t imagine he would not want to be there to pay his respects to the Padres’ version of Vin.

They actually aren’t off on March 20. They play Team Australia in an exhibition game in Sydney.

Ah, yeah – I guess I kind of ignored that since it wasn’t against an MLB team, but you’re right.

Are they expecting the games in Australia to be sold out? What is the capacity of their stadium?

I think they are all sold out, about 50,000 at each (I have tickets to game 2!)

I think this also gives Vin an extra day of rest, and that’s always good for him, too.

New post up top.

Does this mean Kershaw is now likely to start the Australian opener, the road opener and the home opener?

It’s intriguing …

Just wondering if the new LAD channel will be on Directv…..I am a huge Dodger fan in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky. After 25 years of underground coal mining I have quit and want to watch the games.

It might end up being part of the Sports Pack like the Lakers’ TWC Sportsnet is but Dodger games will be blacked out outside of the Dodgers’ viewing area like Lakers games are. Extra Innings is your only way to watch. Besides MLB.TV on the internet.

I wish Vinnie was calling the game in Australia so the Aussies could know what a real baseball announcer sounds like.
